Embedded Planet Launches Agora52 and Agora53: More Power, More Efficiency, Same Ecosystem

Next-gen IoT platform delivers dual-core edge processing, upgraded cellular performance, and drop-in compatibility with existing Agora deployments.

Embedded Planet today announced Agora52 and Agora53, the next generation of its widely adopted Agora platform for connected, edge-capable applications. Building on the trusted foundation of the original Agora, the new line delivers enhanced processing power, improved cellular efficiency, and seamless migration for existing deployments.

Performance Built for the Edge

At their core, both models are built to be drop-in replacements for the original Agora while delivering important upgrades:

  • Agora52 continues the legacy with the proven Nordic nRF52840, ensuring maximum compatibility for current deployments.
  • Agora53 steps up with the Nordic nRF5340, featuring dual Cortex-M33 cores that bring significantly greater processing horsepower for edge analytics, AI workloads, and other demanding applications.

“With Agora53, we’re giving developers access to serious horsepower at the edge,” said Mark Leopold, CEO of Embedded Planet. “It’s perfect for applications where local processing is critical—without requiring a platform change.”

Smarter Cellular and Power Efficiency

Both new models upgrade from the Telit ME310C1-WW to the ME310G1-WW cellular module. Beyond addressing the C1’s end-of-life, this move delivers:

  • Lower power consumption for longer battery life
  • Higher bandwidth and improved sensitivity
  • Broader band support for global deployments
  • Full compliance with 3GPP Release 14

A redesigned direct-to-battery power tree further increases efficiency, replacing the prior buck-boost converter and enabling longer run-time in energy-sensitive applications.

Hardware Enhancements That Matter

Every detail of the Agora refresh was designed to improve usability and performance in real-world deployments:

  • USB-C connector for faster, easier firmware updates to the cellular module
  • RGB status LED plus a dedicated cellular modem LED for more informative visual feedback
  • Streamlined IMU: retains 6-axis motion sensing while removing the rarely used magnetometer
  • Removal of the ambient light sensor, now obsolete and seldom used in field applications

RTOS Options for Every Deployment

  • Agora52 continues to run FreeRTOS, offering consistency for existing deployments.
  • Agora53 introduces Zephyr RTOS, unlocking advanced scheduling, modularity, and performance features designed for edge computing.

Designed for Easy Migration

For most applications, migration from the original Agora to Agora52 will be seamless. A detailed migration guide and firmware resources will be provided to ensure a smooth transition. Key notes:

  • Some pin assignments have shifted and will be documented in the migration guide.
  • The ambient light sensor and 9-axis IMU were removed due to low usage and component obsolescence.

As Leopold summarized: “If it worked on Agora, it will work on Agora52—with just a few updates. And for those looking to level up, Agora53 offers serious performance gains while staying in the same ecosystem.”

Availability

Agora52 and Agora53 are available now. Existing customers will receive a migration guide and firmware transition resources.
